[The following is a transcript of a recorded phone message put out by a group in Chicago called "Citizens' Committee to Clean Up the Courts [CCCC]." (312) 731-1100 and (312) 731-1505.]
Hi! Sherman Skolnick, Citizens' Committee to Clean Up the Courts, 9800 South Oglesby.
Late in 1987, a U.S. government special team quietly started an investigation in Chicago, aided by Military Intelligence, Secret Service, and others. Their report, when completed, was not set to be released until several decades into the next century. They were to find out whether Chicago's first black mayor, Harold Washington, was poisoned. If so, who did it and why?
At the time, the monopoly press said Harold liked junk food, he was overweight, and he died from a heart attack.
The team's first determination was that Harold was poisoned, that the county medical examiner's office would have to have been part of the cover-up. The quiz centered on a coffee cup; he slumped to the floor after drinking some of it. The one usually preparing the coffee was told, someone else, that day, would do it.
Two so-called "technicians" later cut a piece out of his office carpet, where some coffee had spilt. The secret team next determined that "national security" was invoked by the mass media to prevent any real questions being raised about the death. The media policy was to prevent racial riots that occurred after Dr. King was murdered. The team found out that only two small, black radio stations, in Chicago, violated this policy. Others in the press warned them they faced loss of their broadcast license.
The group [was] linked to Lt. Colonel Oliver North and his basement operation -- high-level, retired military people. They were behind it! The team had the details. In fact, one of the retired Generals came several times to town, prior to the murder..... "Planning Committee".
The motive was the same one underlying the murder of President Kennedy, Malcolm X, Dr. King, and others: severe "national security" risk. For example, in July 1960, during the Presidential election, Ronald Reagan sent Nixon a hand-written letter. In their circle, it was a death warrant. John F. Kennedy was a Marxist, Reagan contended, and implied that if Kennedy beats Nixon and gets into the White House -- well, Kennedy would be an extreme risk to the nation. In other words, JFK had to be assassinated for the so-called "good" of the country.
Among Reagan and others, Marxists and Communists were one and the same; they saw no distinction. Dr. King was likewise so labeled a subversive. So the secret group examined Harold's history. While a student leader at Roosevelt college, yes, he was thick with the so-called "communist" circle there. When he ran for Congress, yes, he was aided by those perceived as being members of the Communist Party USA -- labeled as a Soviet puppet apparatus. When he was elected Mayor of Chicago, yes, there were three or more black aldermen labeled by some in the [City] Council as "communists".
So, ultra right wingers saw Harold and his re-election as Mayor as an extreme "national security" matter -- one of the nation's largest cities, center of international banking and commerce, run by "closet communists"! From their point of view, it could not be tolerated. So, top military types, active (though listed as retired), knew what had to be done. The aldermen would be targetted: frame-ups, acts to push them into jail. The federal judges and prosecutors would "do their duty". If not that, well, then murder.
But Harold was an intellectual and clever. You couldn't set him up with a small sum and a peephole camera. So, the secret team made their report: frame-ups and murder, justified in the name of preserving "national security". The generals did their duty.
Some of the team disagreed, however. And so, an independent journalist was shown the report. He didn't have to wait 30 years.
