Hi! Sherman Skolnick, Citizens' Committee to Clean Up the Courts, 9800 South Oglesby.
One of the great secrets of the highly corrupt mass media is the buying and selling of jobs, particularly in radio and TV. The way it works in the Chicago market is typical of the nation. There is a group of six celebrity lawyers here who work the racket. A would-be job holder has to agree to pay fifteen percent of the first year's salary of a three-year contract. Payment has to be made in front, in cash. Five percent goes to the union business agent, five percent to the celebrity lawyer, and five percent to the news director or radio and TV station manager.
One such job holder was somehow dismissed before the end of the first year. He talked off-the-record with a media critic and legal researcher. He told them that he cannot be fired! Because, after all -- he bought the job! And it belongs to him! He wanted an opinion as to whether he can sue for damages. He was upset when informed of the pertinent principle of law: you can't sue to get something that is against public policy. And buying and selling jobs is opposed by public policy. The same judge-made law applies to bank robbers: they cannot sue for police brutality that may result if they are caught on the way from a bank stick- up.
One such lawyer who reportedly knew a lot about all this was Saul Foos, one of the nation's top agents for broadcasting stars. He had a couple of interesting apparent sidelines. For instance, he was a director of a bank in the north suburb of Deerfield, same place Admiral Stansfield Turner is from. The Admiral was director of Central Intelligence in the Carter administration. Did Foos do a little money laundering through his bank? Some think so.
And Foos was charged with the federal crime of defrauding more than 100 investors of millions of dollars. Some were his broadcasting clients, promised the guarantee of no losses and up to forty percent returns in some of the scams, including for non- existent building deals, commodity trading, and such. Foos has also been pushed into bankruptcy court. Naturally, the bankruptcy trustee (for him) is William A. Brandt, jr., previously in charge of CIA proprietary companies worldwide. According to documents released to us under Freedom of Information, Brandt ran CIA's covert operations, terminating the front companies by phony bankruptcies when necessary.
Another lawyer in the position of understanding the buying and selling of jobs is Joel Weisman, also of Deerfield. He's also a celebrity lawyer, and, for many years, runs a local TV panel show whitewashing media lies. Through his law partners, Weisman has been a crony of crooked judges. Cynics claim Joel reportedly knows how to buy a broadcast job or "fix" a court case.
The celebrity lawyers also quietly settle sex cases. Former office workers of CBS's channel 2 here helped us expose an embezzlement racket. They are sorry they settled -- too cheap -- charges they made against their bosses at WBBM-TV, who apparently could not keep their hands to themselves! Working in bookkeeping, they document how, over a period of 20 years, channel 2 embezzled some $40 million belonging to the network. (We first exposed the embezzlement in 1983. The corrupt honchos at IRS, of course, are silent.)
Talking about jobs, up to about 1988 CBS News was the recipient of huge subsidies, from CIA, to finance money-losing foreign news bureaus in spy-world spots. CBS lost the covert funds and had to close overseas offices and lay off a lot of journalist-spies. The subsidy thereafter went to ABC News.
In Chicago, see us on cable tv, channel 21, 9 pm [cst] most Monday evenings.
