CLEANING OUT THE CLINTON FILES
This issue is called "Cleaning Out The Clinton Files" because I am sorting through my file drawers and cleaning them out, or trying to. One of my file cabinets is devoted to conspiracy related items. When I got to the "C's" in this file cabinet, there was one folder that was bulging with news clippings. Guess which folder that was? If you guessed "Clinton", congratulations.
So before tossing these items, I offer a summary (note that CUNG signifies Champaign Urbana News Gazette):

ITEM: (AP) (CUNG, 2/8/94) -- The Rose law firm where first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton was a partner shredded documents last week relating to Whitewater Development Corp., The Washington Times reported today... The paper cited as its source an unidentified Rose employee...
ITEM: (AP) (CUNG, 2/3/94) -- Hillary Rodham Clinton represented federal regulators in a lawsuit against a Clinton family friend and political ally accused of contributing to the failure of an Illinois savings and loan, the Chicago Tribune reported today... The case involved Dan Lasater, a convicted felon whose bond trading firm played a part in the troubles of several savings and loans...
ITEM: (CUNG, 2/18/94) -- Column, datelined Washington, by Roger Simon, "Nussbaum's obstruction of justice". It deals with possible White House obstruction of justice immediately after the death of Vincent Foster.
ITEM: (The Nation, 2/14/94, article by Alexander Cockburn, entitled "President Ronbill") -- Clinton is Reagan right down to the golly-gee bob of the head and the scripted call on New York cop Kevin Jett to stand up and take a bow.
ITEM: (AP) (CUNG, 2/12/94) -- A former Arkansas state employee told reporters Friday she spurned an unwanted sexual advance from then-Gov. Clinton in Little Rock in 1991. The White House denied that the episode occurred... [Paula] Jones said Clinton sent word through a state trooper in his security detail that he wished to see her alone in a Little Rock hotel... Jones said she went to the room where she fended off an advance from Clinton, and left within 15 minutes...
ITEM: (CUNG, 1/30/94) -- An article from Accuracy in Media (authored by Reed Irvine and Joseph C. Goulden), "Media let Clintons off easy on 'Troopergate'". Regarding the American Spectator magazine issue, with the cover story "His Cheatin' Heart" about Clinton's "sordid record as an adulterer while governor of Arkansas", the article notes that "[m]uch of the mainstream media paid little attention to details of Clinton's tom cat behavior, preferring to focus on Hillary's attack on what she called an 'outrageous' story about her husband."
ITEM: (CUNG, 2/4/94) -- "Report suggests White House aide hindered inquiry". More about Nussbaum, the Park Police (a.k.a. the "Meter Maids"), and the "investigation" into Vince Foster's death.
ITEM: (CUNG, 9/28/93) -- "Lawyer: Brown didn't agree to fight embargo". Commerce Secretary Ron Brown denies that he accepted $700,000 in return for helping lift the U.S. trade embargo against Vietnam. According to businessman Binh T. Ly, Brown was paid off in return for his help.
ITEM: (AP) (CUNG, 10/1/93) -- "Vietnam vet group calls for resignation of Commerce chief". A group representing 350,000 Vietnam veterans is seeking Commerce Secretary Ron Brown's resignation...
ITEM: (AP) (CUNG, 1/6/94) -- A longtime associate of President Clinton [Webster Hubbell] helped the federal government investigate the collapse of an Arkansas savings and loan, even though [Hubbell's] relatives took out $1.5 million in loans from the institution...
ITEM: (CUNG, 1/7/94) -- Opinion by Jim Dey, "The Whitewater Whitewash". ...The issue to be determined is to what extent [Madison Guaranty Savings and Loan] was used as a personal piggy bank of the politically connected, whether then-Gov. Clinton arranged for friendly regulation of the institution that delayed its collapse [tab = $50 million] and to what extent the abuse contributed to the bank's downfall...
ITEM: (CUNG, 12/20/93) -- "Members of Clinton security say they helped with trysts". Two members of the security detail of then- Gov. Clinton told Cable News Network that they helped Clinton facilitate extramarital affairs. The interviews prompted an angry denunciation from the White House....
ITEM: (AP) (CUNG, 1/10/94) -- "Audit belied Clinton law firm's letter". Were Madison Guaranty's funds used to pay Clinton's political debts and were funds diverted? A 1986 audit portrays Madison as financially reckless, rife with conflicts and on the brink of collapse. The tone of the report contrasts with the more reserved, sometimes optimistic assessment the Rose Law Firm had given state regulators a few months earlier.
ITEM: (Christian Science Monitor, 8/20/93) -- "Foster, the Press, and the White House Travel Perks". Loss of journalistic credibility with the public, due, in part, to special perks they get from the White House.
ITEM: (CUNG, no date available) -- Text of Vincent Foster's note: "I made mistakes from ignorance, inexperience and overwork. I did not knowingly violate any law or standard of conduct. No one in the White House, to my knowledge, violated any law or standard of conduct, including any action in the travel office. There was no intent to benefit any individual or specific group. The FBI lied in their report to the AG [Attorney General]. The press is covering up the illegal benefits they received from the travel staff. The GOP has lied and misrepresented its knowledge and role and covered up a prior investigation. The Ushers office plotted to have excessive costs incurred, taking advantage of Kaki and HRC. The public will never believe the innocence of the Clintons and their loyal staff. The WSJ editors lie without consequence. I was not meant for the job or the spotlight of public life in Washington. Here ruining people is considered sport."
ITEM: (Newsweek, 8/23/93) -- Regarding the discovery of Vincent Foster's torn up "suicide note": "Who tore up the note? What happened to the 28th piece, the unrecovered triangular fragment where the signature and date could have been? Was a carton of documents removed from Foster's office in the hours after the suicide, as Park Police Chief Robert Langston charged last week?"
ITEM: (Time, 8/9/93) -- Regarding Vincent Foster's "suicide note": "The secrecy surrounding the note and the delay in turning it over to authorities... set off a frenzy of speculation."
ITEM: (CUNG, 1/13/94) -- Opinion by Mona Charen, "It's Time the Clinton's Told the Truth...". The subject of the Clinton's involvement in the Whitewater development project first came to public attention during the 1992 presidential primaries when Jerry Brown raised the matter. Bill Clinton's response to the allegation of impropriety was interesting. He didn't deny it. He didn't admit it. He just didn't answer at all. Instead, he wagged a finger at Brown and warned him to stop "jumping all over my wife".... There is smoke aplenty here... Let's have the truth.
